At SOF (SpotOnFries) Incorporated headquarters (www.spotonfries.fri), an emergency meeting was underway. A disturbing email had arrived. Someone was claiming that machine-made fries could be every bit as good as fries made by human hands. This was potentially devastating news for the entire authentic potato community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The meeting was immediately adjourned, and the AI (Algorithmic Immersed) Policy Team headed for the nearest chip shop to investigate. They ordered four portions of fries with mayonnaise (the fake one, actually).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The first bite caused some confusion. The fries were magnificent. Golden and crisp on the outside, soft and streaming\u2026 sorry, I mean steaming on the inside. Perfectly salted. Even the mayonnaise was excellent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThese may be the best fries I\u2019ve ever had,\u201d said someone from Agrorithmic Recommendations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The others nodded and took another bite. Then someone from Authenticity & Potato-Related Artist Relations happened to look behind the counter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWait a minute.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Everyone stopped chewing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWho cut these potatoes?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The owner pointed at a stainless-steel machine. \u201cThe machine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAnd who fried them?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe fryer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAutomatically?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
An uncomfortable silence fell. One employee slowly put down his little artificial fork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSo these fries weren\u2019t actually made by a human?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI selected the potatoes,\u201d said the owner. \u201cI decide which variety we use, how thick they\u2019re cut, how long they\u2019re pre-cooked, the temperature of the oil, how much salt\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBut you didn\u2019t cut them by hand?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAnd you didn\u2019t personally hold them in the hot oil?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNo. That seemed unwise.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The team stared in horror at their half-empty trays. The best fries they had ever eaten turned out to be fake fries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fortunately, someone from Fried Transparency knew exactly what to do. He took out a marker and wrote on every tray:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u26a0\ufe0f MACHINE-REALIZED FRIES<\/strong> \u201cThere,\u201d he said with relief. \u201cNow the customer can make an informed choice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n The employee from Agrorithmic Recommendations looked at his last fry. Five minutes ago, it had been delicious. Somehow, it tasted different now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWe probably shouldn\u2019t recommend these anymore,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWhy not?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cTo protect human fry artists.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n The owner pointed at himself. \u201cBut I am a human fry artist.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n That required another emergency meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Meanwhile, a customer walked in. He ordered fries, took the tray and tasted one. His face lit up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cGod, these are good.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Someone from SOF Incorporated hurried over. \u201cExcuse me, sir. Before you continue, we feel you should know that those potatoes were cut and fried by machines.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n The customer stopped. He looked at his fries, then at the SpotOnFries team, then back at his fries. He picked up another one, dipped it generously in mayonnaise (still the fake one) and smiled\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWell, it\u2019s the tasting, not the cooking, that makes my day.
